Climate Change - A Grand Challenge

Climate change is a global problem that is going to require people from all disciplines working together to create solutions that work at both technological and societal level. In support of this goal this past year the MIES sponsored the McMaster Energy Week initiative run by the McMaster Undergraduate Energy Society. Although the week culminated with a conference on climate change, the MIES was mainly responsible for developing a case competition based on Canada’s climate change goals.

The case competition was a five day endeavour with graduate students providing both mentorship and facilitating the evaluation process. In its inaugural year, the competition brought together over fifty undergraduate students and asked them to develop a pathways for energy efficient communities of the future. In the end the student generated ideas were incredibly innovative and the MIES is excited to continue being a part of this McMaster initiative over the coming years.
